What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapy utilized by one of the four great written medical traditions, Chinese Medicine. The great written medical traditions are Ayurvedic Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Galenic Medicine and Scientific Medicine (western medicine). Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate the body's intrinsic energy system to effect change that promotes health, well being and strength to fight illness. In addition it stimulates the body to enact its natural healing system to combat disease and pain. It has been practiced for 3000 years and currently is listed by the U.S. National institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as effective for a number of different medical conditions. The needles used in acupuncture are sterile laser cut needles (more like wires) that divide the skin as they are inserted. Unlike western medical needles they are not "cutting" needles and thus rarely inflict trauma to the surrounding tissue or cause bleeding.
Acupuncture is not one single entity. There are different styles of acupuncture that have developed over the centuries and thus not all practitioners treat patients in a similar fashion. Various styles of acupuncture include but are not limited to: Five Element Acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, Korean acupuncture, Taiwanese acupuncture, French energetics and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Most practitioners in the United States practice TCM. In addition there are styles that utilize the ear and scalp to treat patients.
Dr. Rodriguez practices Five Element Acupuncture. In addition as the case requires he may utilize French Energetics, TCM, or ear/scalp modalities.
